Slated for opening in 2002, Sherry’s House
will be Sherry Shepherd's legacy, providing a temporary shelter and
home-away-from-home for the families of children undergoing cancer
treatment at UMass Memorial Medical Center. For the children, it will be a
loving and lighthearted place to play and spend quality time with their
families. Nothing here will remind them of the hospital environment. For
the parents, Sherry's House will be a safe haven within easy reach of the
hospital, welcoming them with a hot cup of coffee, a home-cooked meal, a
hot shower, a comfortable bed to sleep in, and most importantly, an
empathetic shoulder to lean on, Sherry's House will also provide a
permanent home for Why Me, Inc.'s employees and volunteers.
The journey to build Sherry’s House began in 1997 and
became a community effort in January 2000 when the first All-star Marathon
Team participated in the Bermuda International Marathon. All fund-raising
proceeds from the Sherry's House All-star Marathon Team are earmarked
exclusively for the construction of and operating endowment for Sherry's
House.
Why Me Inc. was established in July 1985 by 13 year-old
Sherry Shepherd who was the first pediatric Oncology patient to be treated
at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, Ma. Throughout the course of
her four-year struggle with cancer, Sherry dreamed of helping other kids who
were waging their own battles with cancer. With her parents, she created Why
Me, an acronym for "Worcester Help for Youth, Memories
Everlasting." Through the years, Why Me has played an active role in
helping over 200 families through the may stages of this life-threatening
disease. Why Me, Inc. is an approved 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization.
